The flight of globalization is steered through its course when fueled by knowledge, thrust by engines of technology and uplifted by force of information drive. The emergence of Information and Communication Technology era has the concrete potential of drastically transforming the teaching-learning process. Technology facilitates pedagogy and makes learning effective. This paper addresses on ICT as a key component of radical reformation in bringing about quality education through the functional prospects of new emerging technologies and techniques in developing societies where a one finger touch is the only requisite for getting a task accomplished. Simultaneously, eclectic technology-assisted education with just a click is expected to ensure optimum learning outcomes. This paper provides a meta-analysis of the importance of ICT in education, pros and cons of emerging technologies and the catalytic role played by ICT augmenting the expected learning outcomes in the current educational scenario that facilitates a national agenda of functional literacy. It enunciates on integration of ICT with different teaching strategies to enhance and ensure the scholastic performance. Traditional teaching method has now been revamped through ICT usage. Though the skill-based approach of ICT integration is focused now, the education system is compromised with quality gain. This article unfolded the reasons for glitches in the effective implementation of ICT in the system and the challenges faced in a rapidly expanding global information society. ICT being an icon of modernity and a beacon of innovations in the contemporary world, is still scarce in its utilitarian value and demands seamless efforts to plug the existing loopholes.
The author used Periscope to broadcast live language, translation and technology lectures to her Twitter followers. The Periscope lecture analytics showed that lectures with the highest viewers, impressions and engagement were those about how to develop translation and interpreting skills and how to integrate Elluminate in teaching. Questionnaire-surveys indicated that followers found the Periscope lectures and their replays beneficial, interesting, enriching, invaluable and fulfilling their needs. As a lecturer, the author found the Periscope easy to use. She could go live anytime and anywhere. She did not have to register students. Replays can be accessed via Periscope or Twitter. However, reading comments and questions while live streaming was somewhat challenging. When lecturing via Periscope, the author could not hear viewers' voices or see their facial expressions as in Zoom. Engagement, interaction and communication among the viewers themselves, and the viewers and the instructor were very low. Recommendations for making Periscope lectures more interactive are given.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of conducting asynchronous online discussion forums on low-achieving EFL students in Taiwan. 124 non-English program students from a technological university participated. Based on a textbook, one to three questions were assigned every other week. An asynchronous learning mode was implemented so students could have more time to transmit their thinking into written form. At the end of the semester, students were given a survey questionnaire to express their perceptions of this activity. The findings reveal that students had completed the mission impossible successfully. Students indicated that they could read their peers' work and learned the writing skills together. They also expected the teacher's feedback each time they finished their written assignment. Despite the teacher having heavy workload in conducting this activity, it can be implied that low-achieving students had the potential to complete the mission successfully. By means of carrying out the discussion in an online forum, students not only could improve their reading comprehension, but they could also learn writing skills which are seldom conducted for the non-English program students.
Due to technological developments, “literacy” is redefined as “multimodal literacy". Multimodal literacy has also become a part of the educational system in order to bring variety to the class room and to improve the quality of education in general. Hence, this study investigated the multimodal literacy level of pre-service English language teachers and the relationship between multimodal literacy and gender. It also aimed to determine the ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) use of prospective teachers during their practicum while teaching English as a foreign language. It was conducted with 100 senior year ELT (English Language Teaching) students and a multimodal literacy scale was used to determine the multimodal literacy level of prospective teachers. A questionnaire was used to collect data on the ICT courses taken by the participants and their use of ICT during their practicum. Results revealed that the participants had high multimodal literacy but did not indicate any significant relationship between multimodal literacy and gender. Results also showed that the majority used ICT during practicum even though more than half of the participants had never taken an ICT course throughout their training, which is very promising for the multimodal literacy of future teachers.
The current paper conducted a critical analysis on the studies that have been carried out in both developing and developed countries regarding the adoption of e-learning technology based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT2). The findings indicated that the UTAUT2 model is highly influential for all the models such as UTAUT, TAM and TRA. Moreover, most of the studies indicated that effort expectancy, performance expectancy, social influence, facilitating conditions, habit and Hedonic motivation affect positively and significantly on the Behavioral intention to adopt e-learning technology.
