Abstract

In this paper, Li-Fi, as the name, Light Fidelity indicates that the visible light is exploited to serve two essential functions at the same time. To serve this purpose, the aid of Light Emitting Diodes (LED) is taken into consideration. The two major functions to be rendered by visible light are illumination and communication. This technology is an eco-friendly way of transmitting data by utilizing the visible light spectrum. The main idea behind this is to switch on and off the LED at a faster rate. The rate of flickering is high such that the flickering of LED is not visible to human eyes. Meanwhile Power Line Communication can be integrated along with Li-Fi making use of power lines as the medium of communications. The utilities of home networking over power-lines can take advantage of the existing wiring infrastructure for provision of illumination cum communication. To supplement this, even devices could be controlled by transmitting commands in digital format through the visible light spectrum. This paper envisions a future where data for laptops, smart phones, and tablets is transmitted through the light in a room. And security would be snap – if you can't see the light, you can't access the data. Also Li -Fi can be put into use, wherein electromagnetic waves are strictly prohibited considering the case of aircrafts in this aspect.
