AN EXPLORATORY STUDY OF WOMENS PARTICIPATION IN MICRO ENTERPRISES IN KANYAKUMARI DISTRICT

Abstract

This study focused on the participation of women in micro enterprises in Kanyakumari District, Tamil Nadu. Micro enterprises are small-scale businesses such as tailoring units, petty shops, food processing, handicrafts, and service-based activities that require less capital but provide steady income. For many women in this district, these businesses are not only a means of earning money but also a path to greater confidence, independence, and decision-making power within their families. The research highlights that women-led enterprises make valuable contributions to household income, employment generation, and local economic growth. The aim of the study about to examine the socio-economic profile of women entrepreneurs. To identify the challenges faced by women in sustaining micro enterprises, and to assess the role of government policies, NGOs, and self-help groups (SHGs) in promoting women entrepreneurs. In this study 90 respondents were selected using the convenient sampling method. Primary data and secondary data were collected for this study, and SPSS software was used to analyze the data. The research found that there is, women entrepreneurs possess the talent, ambition, and capability to contribute significantly to socio-economic development. With strengthened institutional support, increased awareness of policies, and removal of key financial and infrastructural barriers, women-led enterprises can evolve from small-scale operations into dynamic growth-oriented ventures. Ensuring a more inclusive, supportive, and resource-rich entrepreneurial ecosystem will not only uplift women but also create broader economic prosperity and social empowerment across the region.
