Obesity treatments entail costly physical and aesthetic tasks, as well as high patient commitment, which renders it challenging for obese people to manage their disease effectively. Gastromechanical receptors monitor gastric distention and activate volume-dependent vagal transmission to initiate the gastric phase and impact satiety. We devised a unique luminal stimulation method that specifically activates these stomach stretch receptors, resulting in a vagal afferent response proportional to mechanical distension. We developed the Vibrating Ingestible BioElectronic Stimulator (VIBES) pill, an accessible device that uses luminal vibratory encouragement to fire up mechanoreceptors and stroke mucosal receptors in the body which leads to the production of serotonin and a hormonal metabolic response similar to that of a fed state. We examined VIBES through 108 meals in hogs which generally led to increased Compared to untreated controls, the treatment significantly reduced food consumption (~40%, P < 0.0001) and weight growth (P < 0.05). The use of mechanoreceptor biology could alter our ability to aid people suffering from nutritional issues.
