Abstract

The study tried to examine the political discourse of President Rodrigo Duterte with the application of Transitivity System under Systemic-Functional Linguistics in exposing the ideologies embedded in his SONA. The study applied a descriptivecontent analysis to examine the language function of the linguistic choices in the address. The study discovered that among six process types, mental process dominates the discourse with a total occurrence of 40.60%, followed by a material process with 23.85%, it was succeeded by the verbal process with 16.90%, whereas the relational process, 15.96%; behavioral process, 1.58% and existential process, 1.11%, recorded the least frequency. The dominant use of this process implies that Duterte senses-out the problems that affect the nation before taking action to combat the issues and concerns. It was concluded that the ideologies found in the SONA were socialism, conservatism, liberalism and environmentalism, which were revealed in the different transitivity-system processes.
