பண்டையக்காலத் தமிழர்கள் காதலையும், வீரத்தையும் போற்றினர். மனிதன் தான் வாழும் நிலத்திற்கு ஏற்பத் தொழில்களை வடிவமைத்துக்கொண்டான். ஐந்நிலங்களை அமைத்துக்கொண்டு அவற்றிற்கேற்ப அவர்கள் வாழ்க்கையை அமைத்து ஒழுக்கம் மற்றும் பண்பாட்டு நெறிகளே வாழ்வியல் மரபாக கொண்டு இயல்பாக வாழத் தொடங்கினான். இலக்கியங்கள் கூறும் வாழ்வியல் மரபுகளுக்குத் தக்கவாறு மனிதன் தன் வாழ்க்கையை அமைத்துக் கொண்டான். இவ்வாழ்வியல் மரபுகள் புறநானூற்றில் பல இடங்களில் காணப்படுகிறது.
