The increasing demand for cement cannot be adequately met by using Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) alone. To meet this demand while ensuring the durability of eco-friendly concrete, it has become essential to incorporate mineral additives and by-products as substitutes to enhance performance without compromising quality. In the construction industry, OPC and river sand are key materials, making them scarce and limited. Furthermore, cement is known to be one of the major contributors to carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Therefore, partial replacement of cement and natural sand in concrete with waste materials or by-products has become necessary, without compromising the quality of the final product. The partial substitution of OPC with Metakaolin (MK) and Silica Fume (SF), combined with 100% manufactured sand (MS) as a sand replacement, has been implemented. Using 100% MS with OPC and SF has resulted in more durable concrete with reduced chloride ingress and better performance compared to using 100% river sand. In addition to cost benefits, the reduction in river sand depletion, addressing environmental and sustainability concerns, significantly contributes to the development of green concrete.
