Though the solitons are more robust than linear transmission systems, the effect of soliton self-frequency shift reduces the stability of the soliton transmission system. In this paper the authors investigated the propagation of ultra-short solitons in fiber-optic systems in the presence of the soliton self-frequency shift effect. They also demonstrated that both the selffrequency shift and the background instability can be effectively controlled using spectral filters of moderate strength together with nonlinear gain devices with gain proportional to the second and fourth power of the amplitude.
