<abstract>The aim of this research is to investigate the development and implications for applications and future directions of the Internet of Things (IoT). The current understanding of the Internet of Things is explored and discussed to understand, what is currently understood because IoT has been often considered a vague and relatively little understood concept. A range of users were asked to describe their understanding of the IoT and how they use IoT devices. A significant finding showed that although the term Internet of Things has been known for several years and is becoming increasingly more widespread. However, there are privacy concerns with regards to the large amounts of personal data, transferred between IoT devices.</abstract>
