JFET_V2_N3_A2 Smart polymers: Smart Material in Biotechnology Indrakant V. Borkar Journal on Future Engineering and Technology 2230 – 7184 2 3 15 27 Smart polymers, smart structure, biochemical engineer Smart polymers are appearing with increasing frequency in scientific and engineering publications as well as in the popular press. The most important components of living cells, proteins, carbohydrates and nucleic acids are basically polymers or one can say "Life is polymeric in its essence" (Galaev and Mattiasson, 1999). Nature uses polymers both as constructive elements and as parts of complicated cell machinery. Srimulus responsive or Samrt polymers undergo strong conformational changes when only small changes in the environment e.g. pH, temperature, ionic strength occur.
