JEE_V10_N2_RP4 Design and Analysis of Traction Drive System for Hybrid Locomotives using 5-phase Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors as Traction Motors C. Nagamani R. Somanatham Journal on Electrical Engineering 2230 – 7176 10 2 27 45 Electric Locomotives, Diesel-Electric Locomotives, Dual Supply, Alternator, Tractive Effort, Speed Retention of Passenger and Freight Trains working on Electric Traction at Stations in the event of Grid Failures / Locomotive Failures cause inconvenience to passengers and delay in delivery of freight, thereby causing losses in revenue. As Traction is a high Power Application, delivery of Power of the order of 1600 kW per Traction Motor would also cause stresses in the Switching Devices in a 3-j Converter System. In order to overcome stress on Switches, a new Drive System using 5-j Inverter driven Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor as Traction Motors that can run on both Electric and Diesel-Electric Traction is proposed by the authors in this research paper.
