This paper proposes a new application of one of the sophisticated FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission Systems) devices, i.e. Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC) to stabilize the frequency of oscillations in an interconnected power system. The SSSC located in series with the tie line between any interconnected areas is applicable to stabilize the area frequency of oscillations by high-speed control of tie-line power through the interconnection. The mathematical model of SSSC is derived from its characteristics of power flow control. The idea based on a dynamic control of tie-line power is applied to stabilize the frequency oscillations of inter area mode. Simulation study exhibits the significant effects of the proposed control.
